Carrie Woodburn Johnson Endowment

The Carrie Woodburn Johnson Endowment was established by the late Mrs. Johnson Tweedy in 1987-88 with the sum of $250,000. Dr. Les Cochran, Provost, began to place $100,000 aside each year to build the endowment, with the goal of reaching one million dollars. Provosts Charles Kupchella and Jane Stephens finished the project in 2009. Since then, the endowment has been used to award individual grants to faculty, staff, and student groups at Southeast Missouri State University to enrich the Kent Library collection.

The Carrie Woodburn Johnson Endowment Grant programs are facilitated through Acquisitions. Requested materials can be electronic, print, or physical format. They must be acquired as a one-time purchase. Materials with recurring costs cannot be purchased with Endowment funds. Specific requirements for each grant program and applications are detailed below.

Faculty and Staff Grants

Faculty and staff are invited to apply for one-time grants of up to $4,000 from the Johnson Endowment each spring semester. Applicants must fill out the application below and supply a list of materials to be purchased with the grant money. We encourage applicants to work with Liaison Librarians in creating their list of materials. (Remember, materials with recurring costs cannot be purchased with Endowment funds.) After submission, department chairpersons and deans OR supervisors, depending on the applicant’s designation as faculty or staff, will be asked to review and endorse each application.

Selection of winning faculty and staff grants is based on the following:

  • Evidence of need
  • Emphasis on instructional and/or research support
  • Consistency with department and university teaching and learning goals and objectives
  • Availability of resources

Announcement of winners will be made by the end of the spring semester. Materials will be purchased beginning in July, with the expectation that they be received, cataloged and ready for use fall semester.

Deadline: Friday, March 29, 2024

Award Maximum: $4,000
