Fall 2012 Athenæum Series: Confluence and Crossroads – the Civil War in the region

Monday, November 26th, 2012

On Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at noon in Sadie’s Place, Ellen Ryan, Project Manager, will talk about “Confluence and Crossroads,” Kent Library’s ongoing digital imaging project to document the American Civil War in a 28-county region of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois.  Ryan will discuss the work of the project staff, who have spent the last 15-months identifying, digitizing, transcribing, and cataloging over 850 letters, maps, diaries and other documents related to the war in this region.  Ryan’s presentation will highlight some of the items identified to date, and will also address why and when historical documents are digitized as a tool for preservation and access to information.  “Confluence and Crossroads” is a collaborative effort between Kent Library, the Special Collections Research Center at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, the Center for Regional History and the Department of History at Southeast Missouri State University.  The project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.  The event is open to all and refreshments will be served.
