Ebooks on tech related subjects are now available through Kent Library. Safari tech books provides titles from prominent technology related publishers such as O’Reilly, Sams, Wiley and others. Subjects and applications covered include graphics & image processing (Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketchup), multimedia/video production (Flash, Adobe Premier, Camtasia), audio/music (Audacity, ProTools, Finale) computer programming (C, Python), cybersecurity, web design (Dreamweaver, Drupal), teaching online (Moodle), productivity (Microsoft Office) and more.

12 Noon at Kent Library’s Sadie’s Place

Americans coming of age in the early nineteenth century wrestled with their role in the development of the fledgling United States. On one hand, they revered George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and the other founding fathers and sought to emulate their patriotism. On the other hand, this so-called first generation of Americans recognized their unique opportunity to shape conceptions of patriotic loyalty and American nationalism. On Independence Day in the urban Midwest, these two concerns often came into conflict as mid-westerners used the holiday to both reflect on the past and forge ahead in constructing a unique national identity based on contemporary, rather than historical, concerns. This on-going tension between past and present – wrestling with the memories of Washington and the founders – often emerged on the Fourth of July and provides an important window into the construction of American national identity in this formative period of United States history.

The event is open to all and refreshments will be served.

Spring 2013 Athenæum Series: Carbon Footprints and Climate Change
April 17th, 2013, noon in Kent Library Sadie’s Place. Presented by Dr. Steve Overmann

A Carbon Footprint is a quantitative estimate of the amount of carbon dioxide (C02) released due to the activities of an individual, organization, or society. Carbon Footprint analyses are important because CO2 emissions are the primary driving force behind global climate change. The Carbon Footprints of humans, the United States, Southeast Missouri State Unversity, and individuals will be considered, as well as steps that can be taken to reduce CO2 emissions. Recent scientific reports regarding climate change will be summarized.

The event is open to all and refreshments will be served.

Kent Library is excited to announce the addition of the Historical New York Times to our collection of online resources. The entire series of this newspaper is available in full text and full image from 1851 to 2009, with full text (words only) also available from 2009 to the present

Articles are scanned in individually, as well as full images of each page, so you can see the content as it was originally published, including photographs and advertisements in context.

Kent Library is pleased to showcase the talents of student musicians from Southeast Missouri State University’s Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, Department of Music. This recital has become a highly anticipated part of each Athenæum series, and Kent Library is proud to introduce this season’s extraordinary musicians. This is an exciting opportunity to support developing musicians and enjoy some of the world’s most treasured musical masterpieces.

Spring 2013 Athenæum Series: Female Book Owners in Flanders and the Low Countries: Identity expressed through patronage.

On Wednesday, March 6 at noon, as part of Kent Library’s Athenaeum series, Dr. Joni Hand of the Department of Art will present “Female Book Owners in Flanders and the Low Countries: Identity expressed through patronage.”

The proliferation of books of hours in the 14th and 15th centuries was due in part to the desire of the laity to pray in the manner of the clergy. In addition to specific prayers, many patrons had stylistic preferences incorporated into their manuscripts that reveal their cultural backgrounds or aesthetic sensibilities. The textual and aesthetic choices made for manuscript commissions by noble-women were especially revealing. Religious manuscripts gave women a vehicle by which they could assert their individual identities within the restrictive court environment.

The event is open to the public and snacks will be provided.

Open access research initiative

On Friday, February 22, the White House directed Federal agencies with more than $100 million in research and development spending to develop plans to make the published results of federally funded research freely available to the public within one year of publication. This is in addition to the recently introduced Fair Access to Science and Technology Research Act (FASTR).

Access over 200,000 ebooks from Open Library

Due to the Missouri State Library’s participation in Open Library, Missourians have access to over 200,000 ebooks that can be ‘checked out’ for a two week period at http://openlibrary.org

You will need to create an account and then you can search or browse the collection and check out a book to download a pdf or e-pub format to read on your computer or e-reader. To use e-pub format, you will need to download the free Adobe Editions program – this also lets you transfer an e-pub book to a mobile device.
