Guide to the
Works Progress Association Historical Records Survey,
Cape Girardeau, Missouri
10 reels
WPA Sign
Begun in 1935 as an effort of the federally-funded W.P.A., the Historical Records Survey attempted to inventory the historical records of each state, county by county.  The completed inventories included the holdings of public offices, churches, private collections, and special groups.  Background information on the history of each surveyed county and town was also compiled by the surveyors.  The project was incomplete in 1942 when the American involvement in World War II led to its permanent suspension.  The ten reels in his collection contain the compiled inventories for the city of Cape Girardeau.  The original records are deposited at the State Historical Society of Missouri at Columbia.
