| Historical Note |
| The women's rights movement began in the United States in the early part of the nineteenth century in conjunction with the abolitionist movement; women's suffrage was one of the key issues for the movement. In 1869 the National American Woman Suffrage Association was formed by leading suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, with the goal of obtaining a constitutional amendment granting womens suffrage. The 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote in America was finally ratified in 1920. |
