The University Bicentennial Committee was established in 1974. The first actual meeting of the Bicentennial Committee was held on January 22, 1975. The University Bicentennial Committee was divided into three subcommittees each having its own responsibilities. The first sub-committee, “Heritage ’76,” was created to stimulate preservation and strengthen national heritage. “Festival USA,” the second subcommittee, was designed to share the traditions of America and promote travel in the United States. In particular this subcommittee was created to get the University community involved through cultural activities (i.e., music and theater productions). The final subcommittee, “Horizon ’76,” was created on the principle of defining and proceeding with the past cultural attainments. Among the initiatives undertaken by the Horizon ’76 subcommittee were: the development of a university archives for the preservation of historical materials, coordinated by the Committee for the Preservation of Historical Documents; the establishment of archeological sites on land provided by donors to the university; and the creation of a lecture series; and the establishment of a room in the University Center dedicated to historical exhibits.
