Abstract: Transcriptions (2 copies) of memoranda book kept by Thomas J. Dalton, a private in Company E, 8th Missouri Cavalry (CSA). Daltonís record book consists various combinations of personal memoranda and records pertaining to Co. E, including clothing and ordnance issues, records of the men in his unit (i.e., AWOL, captured, injured), and records of goods issued and payments to individuals affiliated with camp life (e.g., laundresses, laborers).

Biographical Note
 
Dalton enlisted as a private on 20 September 1862 in Mississippi County, Missouri. He had prior service in Gen. M. Jeff Thompsonís 1st Division, Missouri State Guard. Daltonís Co. E was attached to the battalion of Missouri Cavalry under Col. William E. Jeffers through December 1862, when the battalion was re-organized as the 8th Missouri Cavalry. Dalton was promoted to sergeant of Co. E on 24 December 1862. He is listed on all the regimental records that exist for Co. E through the end of the war. He was surrendered at Shreveport, LA, on 26 May 1865, and was paroled on 7 June 1865. Dalton died on 13 January 1917 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Mississippi County, MO. (Goodspeedís History of Southeast Missouri, p. 967).
