Historical Note

In May of 1949, twenty-seven tornados touched down in Cape Girardeau causing $13,000,000.00 in damage. The largest tornado touched down on May 21, causing more damage than the other tornados combined.

Scope and Content Note

Images (14) primarily consist of seriously damaged homes, but also include other structures. The locations are identified by business name, the last name of the home’s resident, or by street address. The photos have been arranged into businesses, identified personal residences, and then street address.
