Historical Note
The Southeast Missouri Press Association, an organization of editors, publishers, and employees of publishing establishments, is a regional association of the Missouri Press Association and was organized in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on April 13, 1893[1]. The Missouri Press Association (MPA) was founded on May 16, 1867 by publishers and editors of Missouri newspapers in order to serve its member newspapers.[2]
Scope and Content Note
History of the Southeast Missouri Press Association, its organization, past presidents, and meeting minutes throughout the years 1893-1982. It was compiled by Alden Pinney of the Scott County Democrat at Benton, with the assistance of newspapermen of the section and State Historical Society at Columbia, Missouri. Minutes of the 1982 meeting were later glued in after the typewritten entries. The minutes of the early meetings mostly contained lavish descriptions of their banquets and witty entertainment and little commentary on what they were setting out to accomplish. In later years, more members attended and more papers were presented concerning issues of the press.
